Remembering Margo Smith: The Life and Legacy of the Dynamic Country Singer

  • by

Margo Smith, a popular country singer, has passed away at the age of 84. She was known for her energetic hits in the late 1970s and was later recognized as "The Tennessee Yodeler". Throughout her career, she had a successful collection of country and Christian hits.

Betty Lou Miller, who later became known as Smith, was born in Dayton, Ohio. Her interest in performing was sparked by a television show in her locality, and she even acquired the skill of yodeling at a young age. However, she ultimately chose to pursue a career in teaching rather than pursuing her dream of becoming a country star.

According to AllMusic, her unconventional journey to fame started when she began singing in her classroom and later at parent teacher association gatherings. This eventually led to opportunities for radio performances, which then paved the way for her to create a demo record and secure a recording contract.

Smith started to openly express her femininity in a more prominent manner starting in 1979. One of her notable achievements during this time was the release of "Still a Woman," a song from her A Woman album, which became a successful Top 10 hit

In the chorus, she sings, "Simply close the door and switch off the light / The plane will take off tonight / Hold on tight as we embark / I remain a woman."

In Smith's album "Just Margo" released in 1979, the cover portrayed her wearing only a satin robe. This was considered bold and daring at that time, even though in 2024 the outfit may appear more like a housecoat. Despite her declining popularity on country radio, her openness to discuss sexuality and her provocative concert performances helped boost ticket sales.

Suddenly, she reverted back to being the teacher from Ohio and admitted that she regretted this particular phase of her life. According to Music Row, in 1983 she began embracing the persona of the Tennessee Yodeler, but ten years later she transitioned into a more conservative mindset. Alongside her daughter Holly, she adopted the stage name Margo Smith and Holly, and together they became an acclaimed Christian country duo.

Smith relocated to Florida during the latter part of her life and dedicated her time to perfecting the art of yodeling. She generated a source of income by imparting her yodeling skills to others, with one of her notable students being Taylor Ware, the runner-up of America's Got Talent in 2006. Eventually, she returned to Nashville, but unfortunately passed away on January 23 at the age of 84.

A stroke had occurred only a few days ago. Smith is survived by her husband Richard Cammeron, as well as one son, two daughters, and other relatives.

Instead of sending flowers, the family is kindly requesting individuals to contribute a donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
