Remembering Margo Smith: The Journey of a Country Singer, Teacher, and Yodeler

  • by

Renowned country singer Margo Smith, who was famously referred to as "The Tennessee Yodeler," has sadly passed away at the age of 84. Throughout her career, which peaked in the late 1970s, she achieved great success on the country music charts and also made a significant impact in the Christian music genre. She leaves behind a vast collection of beloved country and Christian hits that will

Betty Lou Miller, later known as Smith, was born in Dayton, Ohio. Growing up, she found inspiration in a TV show and developed the skill of yodeling at a young age. However, she chose to pursue a career in teaching rather than pursue her dream of becoming a country star.

According to AllMusic, her unique journey towards fame began when she first showcased her singing talent in her classroom and later during parent teacher association gatherings. This eventually led to opportunities for radio performances, which ultimately resulted in her creating a demo record and securing a recording contract.

Smith started to openly express her femininity in a more prominent manner starting in 1979. The song "Still a Woman," which was featured on her album A Woman, became a daring success, reaching the Top 10 charts.

She sings in the chorus, "Please close the door and switch off the lights. The airplane is going to take off tonight. Hold on tightly as we embark on this journey. Remember, I am still a woman."

In the 1979 album "Just Margo" by Smith, the cover depicted her wearing just a satin robe, which was considered bold at the time, although it may now resemble more of a casual housecoat in 2024. Despite her declining popularity on country radio, her openness about sex and the provocative performances she delivered during her concerts helped boost ticket sales.

Unexpectedly, she reverted back to being the teacher from Ohio and expressed remorse for this phase in her life. According to Music Row, in 1983 she began to adopt the persona of the Tennessee Yodeler, but ten years later she transitioned into a more conservative stance. Alongside her daughter Holly, she transformed into Margo Smith and Holly, a successful Christian country duo.

During the later part of her life, Smith relocated to Florida where she dedicated her time to yodeling. She was able to make a living by teaching others how to yodel, with one of her notable students being Taylor Ware, who was the runner-up on America's Got Talent in 2006. Smith eventually returned to Nashville and passed away on January 23 at the age of 84.

Recently, she had experienced a stroke only a couple of days ago. Smith's family members who are still alive include her husband, Richard Cammeron, as well as one son, two daughters, and other relatives.

Instead of sending flowers, the family kindly requests making a donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
