Remembering Margo Smith: The Journey of a Country Star and Tennessee Yodeler

  • by

Margo Smith, a popular country singer, has passed away at the age of 84. She was known for her energetic and successful country songs in the late 1970s and was later referred to as "The Tennessee Yodeler." Throughout her career, she released a collection of country and Christian hits that will be remembered.

Betty Lou Miller, who later became known as Smith, was born in Dayton, Ohio. Her passion for performing was ignited after watching a television show in her local area. Despite mastering the skill of yodeling at a young age, Smith made the decision to pursue a career in teaching rather than chasing her desire to become a country star.

According to AllMusic, her unique journey towards fame started when she began singing in her classroom and later during parent teacher association gatherings. This eventually led to opportunities for radio performances, which in turn led to her creating a demo record and signing a recording contract.

In 1979, Smith started to openly express her femininity in more noticeable ways. "Still a Woman," a popular song from her album called A Woman, was particularly daring.

In the chorus, she confidently sings, "Simply close the door and switch off the light. The plane is set to take flight tonight. Hang on tight as we soar through the skies. Remember, I am still a woman."

In 1979, Smith's Just Margo album had a daring cover where she was depicted wearing only a satin robe. This was considered bold at the time, although in 2024, the outfit might be seen more like a housecoat. As her popularity on country radio declined, her willingness to discuss sex and incorporate provocative elements in her concerts helped boost ticket sales.

Abruptly, she reverted back to being the teacher from Ohio and expressed remorse for this phase in her life. Music Row highlights that in 1983, she began to adopt the identity of the Tennessee Yodeler, but ten years later she transitioned into more conservative territory. Alongside her daughter Holly, she transformed into Margo Smith and Holly, a successful Christian country duo, receiving accolades for their music.

During the latter part of her life, Smith relocated to Florida and dedicated her time to yodeling. She earned a living by imparting her yodeling skills to others, with one of her notable students being Taylor Ware, the runner-up of America's Got Talent in 2006. Eventually, she returned to Nashville and passed away on January 23 at the age of 84.

A stroke had occurred only a few days prior to her passing. Smith is survived by her husband, Richard Cammeron, as well as one son, two daughters, and other members of her extended family.

Instead of sending flowers, the family is kindly requesting that donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
