6 Haunting Final Performances: Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Daryle Singletary, and More

  • by

There have been six memorable final concerts from legendary artists like Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, and Daryle Singletary. George Jones was aware that his concert would be his last, while Daryle Singletary was unaware, which added an eerie quality to the song he performed to close the night.

Following the passing of Merle Haggard, a story circulated claiming Toby Keith assisted him in exiting the stage gracefully during his last performance. However, this story turned out to be false as Keith was not present at Haggard's final show. The individual who spread this misinformation was also not in attendance.

In reality, actor W. Earl Brown was not present at the show where Keith assisted Haggard. He simply heard about it from someone else.

Taste of Country found a review of what could be Haggard's last concert and found a touching moment that deserves as much recognition as the Toby Keith hero story. This is one of six memories from his final concert that are shared in the video above (and in pictures below).

This video includes John Denver's final performance, Johnny Cash's last song, and Waylon Jennings' made-for-TV farewell performance, adding to the emotional and poignant nature of the collection.

The Singletary performance is the best in our opinion. If you know the song "Old Violin" by Johnny Paycheck, you can appreciate where he took it. If you're not familiar with it, continue watching to see for yourself.
