Chilling Final Concerts: Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Daryle Singletary + More: Stories of Farewell Performances from Country Music Legends

  • by

There have been six memorable final concerts by renowned artists such as Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Daryle Singletary, and others. George Jones was aware that his last concert would be his final performance, while Daryle Singletary was unaware. However, this lack of knowledge only adds to the haunting nature of the song he selected to conclude the evening.

Following the passing of Merle Haggard, there circulated a notable anecdote claiming that Toby Keith had assisted him in gracefully exiting the stage. However, this story turned out to be false. Contrary to popular belief, Keith was not present during Haggard's last performance, and the individual who misled us into believing this was also absent.

In fact, the individual referred to as W. Earl Brown, who is an actor, was not present at the event where Keith actually assisted Haggard in completing his performance. He simply learned about it through word of mouth.

Taste of Country uncovered a review of what turned out to be Haggard's last performance and found a touching moment that deserves just as much recognition as the Toby Keith hero story. This is one of six memories from the final concert that are shared in the video above (and in the pictures below).

Included in this poignant video are the last performance of John Denver, the final song of Johnny Cash, and the made-for-TV farewell performance of Waylon Jennings.

Our preferred performance is the Singletary performance. If you are acquainted with Johnny Paycheck's song "Old Violin," you are aware of the point where he ended it. If you are not familiar, continue observing.
