According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will make a rare public appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards to perform with Luke Combs.
According to insiders, Variety has stated that Chapman will be joining Luke Combs on stage to sing "Fast Car," which was a popular folk-pop song by Chapman in the late 1980s. The song tells the story of a couple trying to break out of poverty. In 2023, Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old, which helped propel his version of "Fast Car" to the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. Sources say she has only been on camera performing three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Despite not hiding his desire to perform "Fast Car" with its original songwriter and recording artist, Combs' team stated in July that there were no current plans for them to perform together. However, they did express excitement at the possibility of it happening in the future.
Chapman, who has been mostly private about the resurgence of the song, has made a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." She expressed her happiness for Combs and gratitude for a new group of fans enjoying her song after it reached No. 1 on the country charts. Chapman mentioned that she didn't anticipate being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is specifically for songwriters and was given to Chapman, making her the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud after her win was announced.
"I regret not being able to attend tonight. It is a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially grateful to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."
"Fast Car" by Combs has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony, and if he is victorious, it will be his first Grammy win.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
