According to a report from Variety, Luke Combs is set to perform with Tracy Chapman at the Grammy Awards in 2024. Tracy Chapman, who usually doesn't make many public appearances, is making an exception for this event.
According to insiders, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together. The song was originally a hit for Chapman in the late 1980s and tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old in 2023, which helped it top the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the event. Reports say that she has only appeared on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to sing "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and singer. In July, after his country cover reached No. 1, his team released a statement saying that there were no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman, but that he would be thrilled if the opportunity presented itself.
Even though she has been mostly private about the renewed popularity of the song, Chapman has released a few statements praising Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and thanked a new group of fans for embracing her song. She mentioned that she did not anticipate being on the country charts, but she feels privileged to be included.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is given specifically to the songwriter, which in this case was Chapman. She became the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.
"I regret not being able to attend the event tonight with all of you. It is a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially thankful to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This is his seventh nomination at the ceremony, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The Grammy Awards in 2024 will be held at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4th, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and will also be available for live streaming on Paramount+.
