Nate Smith was seen spending time with pop-rock singer Avril Lavigne, sparking speculation of a romantic relationship between them. However, they were spotted together in Los Angeles on Monday night (Jan. 29), but a source close to either of them has denied any such rumors.
They are merely acquaintances.
Both The Hollywood Curtain and TMZ have independently released paparazzi videos showing Smith and Lavigne hanging out together. The footage suggests that they engaged in an activity that aligns perfectly with Lavigne's image as the "Sk8er Boi" singer: skateboarding.
A video from TMZ captures the moment Lavigne gets out of the back of a black pickup truck in a gas station parking lot, holding a skateboard. Shortly after, Smith joins her, wearing his typical leather jacket and black baseball cap. He also has a skateboard, but it's evident that he is not as skilled as Lavigne – she quickly glides past him on the sidewalk while he struggles to keep up, using the side of the truck for support.
A video captured by the Hollywood Curtain shows both Smith and Lavigne coming out of Catch Steak, a steakhouse in Los Angeles. It is uncertain if the two videos were recorded on the same evening, but Smith and Lavigne seem to be dressed similarly. However, Lavigne would have had to take off her black hooded sweatshirt before leaving the restaurant.
According to TMZ, Smith and Lavigne were just having dinner together as friends, possibly to talk about potential new music projects.
It's not surprising that Lavigne is getting involved with the country music scene. In 2023, she joined Miranda Lambert on stage at the CMA Fest to perform "Kerosene" and "Sk8er Boi." Lavigne was also listed as a performer at the 2022 ACM Honors ceremony in Nashville, where she paid tribute to Shania Twain by singing Twain's "No One Needs to Know."
Smith is currently experiencing success on country radio with his most recent single, "World on Fire," which is steadily rising on the charts. This track comes after his initial smash hit, "Whiskey on You," which reached the top position on the charts.
