There have been six final concerts that are particularly memorable, including those of Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, and Daryle Singletary. George Jones was aware that his concert would be his last, while Daryle Singletary was not, adding an eerie quality to the song he performed to close the night.
Following the passing of Merle Haggard, there was a widely circulated story about Toby Keith assisting him in exiting the stage with grace. However, this story turned out to be false. Toby Keith did not actually attend Haggard's last performance, and the individual who spread this misinformation was also absent from the event.
In reality, the actor W. Earl Brown was not present at the event where Keith assisted Haggard. He only found out about it afterwards.
Associated: 14 Country musicians who should receive more recognition.
Taste of Country found a review of Merle Haggard's last concert and uncovered a touching moment that deserves just as much recognition as the Toby Keith story. This is one of six memories from his final concert that are highlighted in the video and images below.
The video includes John Denver's final performance, Johnny Cash's last song, and Waylon Jennings' made-for-TV farewell.
We really enjoy the Singletary performance the most. If you know the song "Old Violin" by Johnny Paycheck, you'll understand why it's a standout. If you're not familiar with it, make sure to continue watching.
