According to a report from Variety, Tracy Chapman, who doesn't usually appear in public much these days, may be making a special appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards where she will perform with Luke Combs.
According to insiders familiar with the performers, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together. The song, originally a hit for Chapman in the late 1980s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from a cycle of poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old in 2023, and it quickly became a hit on country radio, reaching the top of the charts.
If Chapman does decide to perform at the Grammys, it will be a significant surprise and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. Variety reports that she has only been seen performing on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has been open about his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite his country cover reaching No. 1, there are currently no plans for him to perform with Chapman. However, he would be thrilled if the opportunity ever presented itself.
While she has mostly kept a low profile since the song became popular again, Chapman has made a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." She shared her happiness for Combs and appreciation for a new group of fans who have embraced her song after it reached No. 1 on the country charts. Chapman also mentioned that she never anticipated being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This prestigious award is given to songwriters, and in this case, it went to Chapman, who became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.
"I regret not being able to join you all tonight. It is a great honor for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the fans of 'Fast Car'."
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh overall at the ceremony, and if he is victorious, it will be his first Grammy win.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
