Lady A: Reflecting on Their Best and Worst Days in Country Music

  • by

Lady A reflects on both their most memorable and their most challenging moments in their career in country music. Throughout their almost two-decade long journey as a band, they have achieved great success by winning numerous awards from organizations like the CMA, ACM, and Grammy Awards.

The story of how they met is quite common: Hillary Scott saw Charles Kelley in a bar and remembered him from his Myspace profile. This happened in the early 2000s when Myspace was popular. In a recent episode of Taste of Country Nights, they discussed their journey in the music industry and how quickly they have achieved success.

I inquired the group to share with me a memorable experience they had in country music, both positive and negative. Kelley was the first one to share their response.

"When we first got the opportunity to perform at the CMAs, we sang 'Love Don't Live Here.' I doubt I will ever experience a moment as surreal as that, where I felt like 'Wow, this is actually happening,'" he recalls.

Scott had a very special and cherished memory.

Her favorite memory was the day they were invited to join the Grand Ole Opry.

Dave Haywood supported Scott's response by agreeing with her.

The first time we performed at the Opry was a memorable experience for us. Our families came to support us, making it a special and emotional moment. It was truly a wow moment for us.

However, it hasn't always been easy for them. Kelley remembers a specific day that stood out as one of the worst, when they were stuck in a situation that could have been one of the best days.

"Ugh, it's frustrating to learn that 'Run to You' reached the top spot on the charts while our bus broke down on the roadside."

Scott recalls a very difficult day when she and the group, along with many other artists in the country music industry, found out about the passing of producer and Lady A co-writer Busbee. She describes it as the most devastating day.

Haywood recalls a difficult moment in country music when Kelley inadvertently struck Scott in the mouth with the microphone, even though the incident did not involve him personally.

Scott mentioned that his lip was accidentally injured by Charles Kelley during a performance at the San Antonio Rodeo. The incident occurred on a rotating stage, where they somehow got in each other's way and Charles' elbow or wrist hit the bottom of Scott's microphone, causing it to hit his lip.

"Then suddenly we started singing 'Need You Now'," she goes on, "and it was such a dramatic moment… we were really getting into the performance when he pointed out, 'You have blood on your teeth'."

The story made all three members of Lady A laugh, suggesting that it has become a cherished memory over time. To listen to the complete interview, you can find it on Taste of Country Nights, On Demand, available on various podcast platforms.
