Lady A Reflects on Their Best and Worst Days in Country Music

  • by

Lady A reminisces about their most memorable and challenging moments in the country music industry. With numerous CMA Awards, ACM Awards, and Grammy Awards under their belt, Lady A has established themselves as one of the most accomplished country groups in their nearly two decades of making music together.

The story of how they met is quite ordinary: Hillary Scott saw Charles Kelley in a bar and remembered him from his Myspace profile. This happened in the early 2000s. In a recent episode of Taste of Country Nights, they discuss how they started their careers and how quickly they have progressed since then.

I inquired the group to share their most memorable experiences in country music, both positive and negative. Kelley was the first to share her response.

When we first performed at the CMAs, we sang 'Love Don't Live Here.' It was a surreal moment for me, feeling like 'Wow, this is actually happening.'

Scott also had a very special and cherished memory.

Her favorite memory was receiving an invitation to join the Grand Ole Opry as a member, which she considers their best day.

Dave Haywood added to Scott's response by agreeing with her.

"The first time we performed at the Opry was a special moment for us. Our families came to town to support us, and it was a very emotional experience. It was like, 'wow!'"

However, there have been challenges along the way for Kelley. They remember a specific "worst" day when they were stuck in a situation that could have been very enjoyable.

"Feeling frustrated because 'Run to You' reached the top spot on the charts while our bus broke down on the roadside."

Scott recalls a very difficult day when she and her group, along with many other artists in country music, found out about the passing of producer and Lady A co-writer Busbee. She describes it as the most heartbreaking moment.

Haywood recalls a challenging day in country music when Kelley unintentionally struck Scott in the mouth with the microphone, an incident that did not involve him at all.

Scott shares that his lip was injured accidentally when he and Charles Kelley were at the San Antonio Rodeo on a rotating stage. Their positions got mixed up, causing Charles Kelley's elbow or wrist to hit Scott's microphone, which then hit his lip.

Then suddenly, we started singing "Need You Now," she explains, and it was a dramatic moment as we got into the performance. He then pointed out that she had blood on her teeth.

The story told by all three members of Lady A made them laugh, indicating that it may now be a cherished memory.
