The country music group Lady A reflects on their most memorable moments, both good and bad, in the industry. Throughout their nearly 20-year career, they have achieved great success, winning numerous CMA Awards, ACM Awards, and even multiple Grammy Awards.
The way they met is quite common: Hillary Scott saw Charles Kelley at a bar and remembered him from his Myspace page. This happened in the early 2000s. In a recent episode of Taste of Country Nights, they discuss their journey in the music industry and how quickly they have progressed.
I inquired with the group about their most memorable experiences in country music, and they shared their best and worst moments. Kelley was the first to share her response.
When we had our first opportunity to perform at the CMAs, we sang 'Love Don't Live Here.' It was a moment where I felt like, 'Wow, this is really happening,' and I don't think I'll ever forget that feeling.
Scott also had a cherished memory of his best moment.
Her favorite memory was being asked to join the Grand Ole Opry.
Dave Haywood supported Scott's response by agreeing with her.
The first time we performed at the Opry was a memorable experience for us because our families all came to town to support us. It was an emotional and special moment.
However, there have been challenges along the way. Kelley remembers a specific day that stood out as one of the worst, as they found themselves stranded on a day that was supposed to be one of the best.
"Ugh, I just learned that the song 'Run to You' reached the top spot on the charts, but at the same time, our bus broke down on the roadside."
Scott recalls a very difficult day, when her group and many other artists in the country music industry found out about the passing of producer and Lady A co-writer Busbee. She describes it as the most heartbreaking moment.
Haywood recalls a difficult moment in his country music career when Kelley unintentionally struck Scott in the mouth with the microphone. This incident, although not directly involving Haywood, was still a challenging experience for him.
Scott described how he accidentally got his lip busted by Charles Kelley during their performance at the San Antonio Rodeo. The stage was rotating, and somehow they ended up in each other's way, causing Charles' elbow or wrist to hit the bottom of Scott's microphone, which then hit his lip.
Then we started singing "Need You Now," and it felt like a dramatic moment as we got into the performance. And then he pointed out that I had blood on my teeth.
The three members of Lady A found a particular story amusing, suggesting that it may now be a cherished memory. The full, unedited interview can be listened to on the Taste of Country Nights podcast, available on various platforms. Just search for it and enjoy!
