Lady A reflects on their most memorable and challenging moments in the country music industry. As a highly accomplished group, they have received numerous accolades, including CMA Awards, ACM Awards, and Grammy Awards, throughout their almost two-decade career as a band.
The story of how they met is quite common: Hillary Scott saw Charles Kelley at a bar and remembered him from his Myspace profile. This happened in the early 2000s. In a recent episode of Taste of Country Nights, they discuss their journey in the music industry and how much they have achieved in a short amount of time.
I inquired the trio about their most memorable experiences in country music, and they each shared their stories. Kelley was the first to speak up.
When we first performed at the CMAs, we sang "Love Don't Live Here." I don't think I'll ever forget that feeling of, "Wow, this is really happening."
Scott cherished a special memory with his best friend.
Her favorite memory is being asked to join the Grand Ole Opry.
Dave Haywood followed up on Scott's response by expressing his agreement with her.
The first time we performed at the Opry was a memorable experience for us. Our families came to town to support us, and it was a very special moment. It was emotional and left us feeling amazed.
However, it hasn't always been perfect for Kelley. They remember a specific day that was particularly bad, as they were stuck in a situation that could have been enjoyable.
"Ugh, it's frustrating to learn that 'Run to You' reached the top spot on the charts while our bus stopped working on the side of the road."
Scott recalls a very difficult day when she and her group, along with many artists in the country music industry, found out about the passing of producer and co-writer Busbee. She described it as a very low point for her.
Haywood describes his most difficult experience in the country music industry as the moment when Kelley unintentionally struck Scott in the face with the microphone, even though it was not directed at him.
Scott describes how Charles Kelley accidentally hit his lip during a performance at the San Antonio Rodeo. The stage was rotating and they somehow ended up in each other's way, causing Kelley's elbow or wrist to hit Scott's microphone, which then hit his lip.
"Then suddenly we started singing 'Need You Now,'" she goes on, "and it was really dramatic… we were really getting into the performance and he pointed out, 'You have blood on your teeth.'"
The story made all three members of Lady A laugh, suggesting that it has become a cherished memory over time. You can listen to the complete interview in its original form by searching for Taste of Country Nights, On Demand on your preferred podcast platform.
