Lady A Reflects on Their Best and Worst Days in Country Music: From Career Milestones to Bus Breakdowns

  • by

Lady A reflects on both their most memorable and challenging experiences in the country music industry. With numerous accolades from CMA Awards, ACM Awards, and Grammy Awards throughout their two-decade career, Lady A has established themselves as one of the top country groups in music history.

The story of how they met is quite common: Hillary Scott saw Charles Kelley in a bar and remembered him from his Myspace profile. This happened in the early 2000s, when Myspace was popular. In a recent episode of Taste of Country Nights, they discussed their journey in the music industry and how quickly they have progressed.

I inquired about the trio's most memorable experiences in country music, both good and bad. Kelley was the first one to share her thoughts.

"When we first had the opportunity to perform at the CMAs, we sang 'Love Don't Live Here.' I don't believe I will ever experience a moment quite like that again, where I felt like 'Wow, this is actually happening,'" he explained.

Scott also had a cherished and special memory with his best friend.

Her favorite memory was when she received an invitation to join the Grand Ole Opry.

Dave Haywood supported Scott's response by agreeing with her.

The first time we performed at the Opry was a memorable experience for us, especially because our families came to town to support us. It was an emotional and special moment for all of us.

However, it hasn't always been easy and positive for Kelley. They remember a specific "worst" day when they were stuck in a situation that could have been great.

"Ugh, we just found out that 'Run to You' reached the top spot on the charts, but unfortunately, our bus broke down on the side of the road."

Scott recalls a very difficult day when she and the rest of her group, along with many other artists in the country music industry, found out about the passing of producer and Lady A co-writer Busbee. She describes it as a very tough and sad moment.

Haywood recalls a challenging experience in his country music career when Kelley unintentionally struck Scott in the mouth with the microphone. This incident was difficult for Haywood, even though he was not the one directly involved.

Scott mentioned that his lip was accidentally injured by Charles Kelley at the San Antonio Rodeo. The incident occurred on a rotating stage, where their paths crossed and Charles' elbow or wrist hit the bottom of Scott's microphone, causing it to hit his lip.

Then we started singing "Need You Now," and it was a dramatic moment. We were really getting into the performance when he suddenly pointed out that I had blood on my teeth.

The three members of Lady A found this story amusing, suggesting that it may now be a cherished memory for them.
