Lady A Reflects: The Best and Worst Days in Country Music

  • by

Lady A reflects on their most memorable moments in the country music industry, including both their highest achievements and toughest challenges. With numerous CMA Awards, ACM Awards, and Grammy Awards under their belt, Lady A has solidified their status as one of the top country groups in the industry over the past two decades.

The way they met is quite common: Hillary Scott saw Charles Kelley in a bar and remembered him from his Myspace page. This happened in the early 2000s. In a recent episode of Taste of Country Nights, they discuss their journey in the music industry and how quickly they have achieved success.

I inquired about the trio's most memorable experiences in country music, both positive and negative. Kelley was the first to share their thoughts.

"When we had the opportunity to perform at the CMAs for the first time, we sang 'Love Don't Live Here.' It was an unforgettable moment for me, feeling like 'Wow, this is actually happening,'" he recalls.

Scott cherished a special memory from his best friend as well.

According to her, the day they were invited to join the Grand Ole Opry was their most memorable and special day.

Dave Haywood added onto Scott's response by showing his agreement with her.

The first time we performed at the Opry was a memorable experience because our families came to town to support us. It was a very emotional and special moment for us.

However, there have been difficult times as well. Kelley remembers a specific day that was particularly challenging, as they were stuck in a situation that could have been great.

"Ugh, just found out that 'Run to You' reached the top spot on the charts, but at the same time our bus broke down on the side of the road."

Scott recalls a very difficult day when she, along with many others in the country music industry, found out about the passing of producer and co-writer Busbee. She describes it as a very low point for her.

Haywood recalls a difficult moment in country music when Kelley unintentionally struck Scott in the mouth with the microphone, even though it was not directed at him.

Scott recounted how his lip got injured accidentally by Charles Kelley during a performance at the San Antonio Rodeo. The incident occurred on a rotating stage when their movements caused a collision that resulted in Scott's lip being busted by the microphone.

"Then suddenly we started singing 'Need You Now'," she explains, "and it became really intense… we were really getting into the performance when he pointed out, 'You have blood on your teeth'."

The three members of Lady A found this story funny, indicating that it has likely become a cherished memory over time.
