Lady A: The Highs and Lows of Their Country Music Journey

  • by

Lady A reflects on both their most memorable and challenging moments in the country music industry. With numerous CMA Awards, ACM Awards, and Grammy Awards under their belt, Lady A has established themselves as one of the top country groups in the industry during their nearly two-decade career.

The story of how they met is quite common: Hillary Scott saw Charles Kelley at a bar and remembered him from his Myspace profile. This happened in the early 2000s. In a recent episode of Taste of Country Nights, they discuss their career and how quickly they have progressed in a short amount of time.

I inquired the group about their most memorable experiences in country music, both positive and negative. Kelley was the first to share her story.

When we had our first performance at the CMAs, we sang "Love Don't Live Here." It was a moment where I felt like, "Wow, this is actually happening," he expressed.

Scott also had a very cherished memory that he held dear.

Her favorite memory was when they were invited to join the Grand Ole Opry as members.

Dave Haywood supported Scott's response by adding his own agreement.

"The first time we performed at the Opry, our families visited town to support us, and it was a very meaningful experience. It was an emotional moment for us, like, we were really amazed!"

However, there have been challenges along the way. Kelley remembers a specific day that stands out as one of the worst, when they found themselves stranded on what was supposed to be a great day.

"Ugh, it's frustrating that 'Run to You' reached No. 1 and our bus stopped working on the roadside."

Scott recalls a very difficult day, when she and her group, along with many other artists in the country music industry, found out about the passing of producer and co-writer Busbee. She describes it as a very sad and challenging moment.

Haywood recalls a challenging experience in country music when Kelley unintentionally struck Scott in the mouth with the microphone, which was a difficult moment for him as it did not involve him personally.

Scott described how his lip was injured accidentally by Charles Kelley during a performance at the San Antonio Rodeo. The incident occurred on a rotating stage, where their movements got mixed up and Charles' elbow or wrist accidentally hit Scott's microphone, causing it to hit his lip.

"Then suddenly we started singing 'Need You Now'," she adds, "and it felt really intense… we were really into the performance and he suddenly pointed out, 'You have blood on your teeth'."

The story made all three members of Lady A laugh, suggesting that it has become a cherished memory over time. You can listen to the complete, unedited interview on Taste of Country Nights, On Demand, available on various podcast platforms. Just search for it to listen.
