According to a report from Variety, Luke Combs is expected to perform with Tracy Chapman at the upcoming Grammy Awards in 2024. Despite her rare public appearances, Chapman may make an exception for this event.
According to sources familiar with the situation, Variety has reported that Chapman will be joining Luke Combs on stage to sing "Fast Car," which is a popular folk-pop song from the late 1980s about a couple trying to break free from poverty. The song became part of Combs' music collection in 2023 when he covered it on his Gettin' Old album, leading to its success on the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it would be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the event. Variety reports that she has only been on camera performing three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with its original songwriter and recording artist. Despite his country cover of the song reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there are currently no plans for him to perform with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the opportunity ever presented itself.
While staying mostly away from the spotlight during the song's comeback, Chapman has made a few comments in favor of Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached the top spot on the country charts, she expressed her joy for Combs and appreciation for a younger audience connecting with her music. She mentioned that she never imagined her music on the country charts, but is grateful for the recognition.
At the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is specifically for the songwriters, so Tracy Chapman, who wrote the song, became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud after her win was announced.
"I regret that I couldn't attend the event this evening. It's a great honor to have my song acknowledged again, 35 years after it was first released. I want to express my gratitude to the CMAs, as well as a special thank you to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car.'"
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony, and if he is victorious, it will be his first Grammy win.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and will also be available for live streaming on Paramount+.
