Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Deliver Show-Stopping Performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards

  • by

According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will make a rare appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards to perform alongside Luke Combs. Chapman is known for keeping a low profile, but this event might be an exception for her.

According to insiders, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will perform "Fast Car" together. The song was originally a hit for Chapman in the late 1980s and tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. In 2023, Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old, which helped propel "Fast Car" to the top of the country radio charts.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the night. Variety reports that she has only been on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

Combs has openly expressed his desire to sing "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite the country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there were no current plans for him to perform with Chapman. However, they also mentioned that he would be thrilled if the opportunity presented itself in the future.

Even though she has not been in the spotlight much since the song became popular again, Chapman has made a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." She expressed happiness for Combs and gratitude for a new group of fans who are enjoying her song. Chapman also mentioned that she never imagined her song would end up on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is specifically for songwriters, so Tracy Chapman, who wrote the song, became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was shared after her win was announced.

"I apologize for not being able to attend tonight. It is a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since its release. I am grateful to the CMAs, Luke, and all the fans of 'Fast Car' for their support."

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This is his seventh nomination at the awards show and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy win.

The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and will also be available for live streaming on Paramount+.
