According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will be making a rare public appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards to perform with Luke Combs. Chapman is not known for making frequent public appearances.
According to insiders, Variety has revealed that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together on stage. "Fast Car" is a folk-pop hit from the late '80s by Chapman that tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. In 2023, Combs included a cover of the song on his Gettin' Old album, which helped it reach the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will come as a big surprise and will probably be one of the most discussed moments of the event. Variety reports that she has only performed in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite his country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there are no current plans to perform with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the opportunity presented itself in the future.
Although she has mostly kept a low profile regarding the song's comeback, Chapman has released a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached the top spot on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and her gratitude for a new group of fans appreciating her song. She also mentioned that she never thought she would see her song on the country charts, but she is honored to be included.
At the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" received the Song of the Year award. This award is given only to songwriters, and in this case, it was won by Chapman. This made her the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.
"I apologize for not being able to attend tonight. It is a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again 35 years after it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The Grammy Awards in 2024 will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4th, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
