According to a report from Variety, there is speculation that Tracy Chapman may make a rare appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards to perform with Luke Combs. Chapman is not known for frequent public appearances.
According to sources familiar with the artists, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will perform together on stage to sing "Fast Car," which was originally a folk-pop hit by Chapman in the late 1980s. The song tells the story of a couple trying to break free from recurring poverty. In 2023, Combs included a cover of "Fast Car" on his Gettin' Old album, which led to the song reaching the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will come as a big surprise and will probably be one of the most discussed moments of the night. According to Variety, she has only been on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" alongside its original songwriter and recording artist. Despite his team stating that there are currently no plans for a collaboration with Chapman, they mentioned that he would be enthusiastic if the opportunity were to arise in the future.
Although she has mostly remained private about the revival of the song, Chapman has made a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car". When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she mentioned that she was pleased for Combs and thankful for a younger audience enjoying her music. Chapman also mentioned that she never anticipated being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.
At the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is given specifically to songwriters, so Tracy Chapman, the songwriter of the song, became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.
"I regret not being able to attend tonight. It is a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The Grammy Awards in 2024 will be broadcasted from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4th, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and will also be available for live streaming on Paramount+.
