According to a report from Variety, Luke Combs is set to perform with Tracy Chapman at the upcoming Grammy Awards in 2024. Tracy Chapman, who usually doesn't make many public appearances, is considering making an exception for this event.
According to sources familiar with the artists, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together. The song, originally a folk-pop hit in the late '80s by Chapman, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old in 2023, which helped the song reach the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman does decide to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably a highlight of the night. She has only been in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to sing "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and performer. Even though his team stated that there were no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the opportunity presented itself.
Even though she has mostly stayed away from the spotlight during the song's comeback, Chapman has made a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she mentioned that she was pleased for Combs and appreciative of a new group of fans who are enjoying her song. She also stated that she never anticipated being on the country charts, but she feels privileged to be included.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This prestigious honor is given specifically to songwriters, and in this case, it was awarded to Chapman. This made her the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.
"I apologize for not being able to attend the event tonight. I am grateful and honored that my song has been acknowledged after 35 years since its release. I want to express my gratitude to the CMAs, as well as a special thank you to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is the seventh for Combs at the Grammys, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy win.
The Grammy Awards in 2024 will be held at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and available for live streaming on Paramount+.
