According to insiders, Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together on stage. The song, originally a folk-pop hit from the late 1980s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Surprisingly, Combs included a cover of the song on his album "Gettin' Old" in 2023, propelling it to the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. It has been reported that she has only been seen performing on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with its original songwriter and recording artist. Despite the country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team announced that there are currently no plans for him to perform with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the opportunity presented itself in the future.
Even though Chapman has mostly stayed away from the spotlight when it comes to the popularity of the song, she has made a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she mentioned that she was pleased for Combs and thankful for a younger audience connecting with her song. She also stated that she never anticipated being on the country charts, but she is grateful for the recognition.
At the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is specifically given to songwriters, and in this case, it went to Chapman, who became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.

The song "Fast Car" by Combs has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This nomination is Combs' seventh at the Grammy ceremony. If he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
