Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Perform ‘Fast Car’ at 2024 Grammys: A Historic Collaboration

  • by

According to a report from Variety, it is possible that Tracy Chapman will make a rare appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards to perform with Luke Combs. Chapman is not known for making public appearances frequently.

According to sources familiar with the musicians, Variety has revealed that Chapman and Luke Combs will perform "Fast Car" together. The song, originally released by Chapman in the late 1980s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from a cycle of poverty. Despite its origins, the song became popular again in 2023 when Combs covered it on his album Gettin' Old, leading to it topping the country radio charts.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably a highlight of the evening. Variety reports that she has only performed in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite the country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team announced that there were no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman. However, they also mentioned that Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity to perform together ever came up.

Even though she has mostly stayed away from the spotlight during the song's comeback, Chapman has released a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached the top spot on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and thanked a new group of fans for embracing her song. She also mentioned that she never anticipated being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be a part of it.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This prestigious award is given specifically to songwriters, and in this case, went to Chapman, marking her as the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole writer. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.

"I regret that I couldn't attend tonight. It's a great honor to have my song acknowledged again after 35 years. Thank you to the CMAs, Luke, and all the 'Fast Car' fans for their support."

The song "Fast Car" by Combs has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This is his seventh nomination at the awards show, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and will also be available for live streaming on Paramount+.
