Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Perform ‘Fast Car’ at 2024 Grammys: A Historic Moment in Music

  • by

According to a report from Variety, it is said that Tracy Chapman, who doesn't usually make public appearances, may perform at the 2024 Grammy Awards alongside Luke Combs.

According to insiders, Variety has revealed that Chapman will be joining Luke Combs on stage to sing "Fast Car," a popular folk-pop song from the late 1980s. The song tells the story of a couple trying to break free from recurring poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old in 2023, which helped propel his version of "Fast Car" to the top of the country radio charts.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it would be unexpected and probably create a lot of buzz. As reported by Variety, she has only appeared on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

Combs has expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with its original songwriter and recording artist. Despite his country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there were no immediate plans for a collaboration with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the opportunity to perform together ever came up.

Although she has not been very visible in the media since the song became popular again, Chapman has made a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." She mentioned feeling happy for Combs and thankful for a new group of fans who are enjoying her song. Chapman also mentioned that she never anticipated being on the country charts, but she feels honored to have her music there.

At the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is specifically for songwriters, so Tracy Chapman, who wrote the song, became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.

I regret not being able to attend tonight. It is a great honor for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the fans of 'Fast Car'.

The song "Fast Car" by Combs has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This nomination is Combs' seventh at the awards show. If he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The 2024 Grammy Awards will be broadcasted live from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and also streamed live on Paramount+.
