According to a report from Variety, it has been mentioned that Tracy Chapman, who usually doesn't make public appearances, might make an exception by performing at the 2024 Grammy Awards alongside Luke Combs.
According to sources familiar with the musicians, Variety has reported that Chapman will be joining Luke Combs on stage to sing "Fast Car," which was a popular folk-pop song by Chapman in the late 1980s. The song tells the story of a couple trying to break free from ongoing poverty. Surprisingly, Combs included a cover of the song on his 2023 album "Gettin' Old," and it quickly climbed to the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman does decide to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. Variety reported that she has only performed in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite his country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there are no current plans for him to perform with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the opportunity did come up in the future.
Although she has not been very visible in public discussions about the song's popularity, Chapman has made a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car". When the song reached the top spot on the country charts, she mentioned feeling "happy" for Combs and "grateful" for a younger audience connecting with her music. She also mentioned feeling honored to see her song on the country charts, even though she never anticipated it.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is specifically given to songwriters, so Tracy Chapman received the honor as the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the podium after her win was announced.
"I regret not being able to join you all tonight. It is a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. Thank you to the CMAs and a heartfelt thanks to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car.'"
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the upcoming Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony. If he ends up winning, it will be his first Grammy award.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be broadcasted from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and will also be available for live streaming on Paramount+.
