According to a report from Variety, Luke Combs is set to perform alongside Tracy Chapman at the 2024 Grammy Awards. Despite her rare public appearances, Chapman may make an exception for this event.
According to sources familiar with the situation, Chapman and Luke Combs are set to perform "Fast Car" together on stage. The song, originally a folk-pop hit from the late '80s by Chapman, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. In 2023, Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old, which propelled his version of "Fast Car" to the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman does decide to perform at the Grammys, it would be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. Variety reported that she has only been on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite his country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there are currently no plans for a collaboration with Chapman. However, they also mentioned that he would be thrilled if the opportunity presented itself.
Although she has been mostly keeping a low profile during the song's comeback, Chapman has released a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached the top spot on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and appreciation for a new generation of fans who are enjoying her song. She mentioned that she didn't anticipate being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.
At the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This prestigious honor is given to songwriters, and in this case, it was given to Chapman. This marked her as the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as a sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the podium after her win was announced.
"I regret that I was unable to attend tonight. It is a great honor to have my song acknowledged again after 35 years since its first release. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."
The song "Fast Car" by Combs has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This is his seventh nomination at the ceremony, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy win.
In 2024, the Grammy Awards ceremony will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4th. The event will be televised on CBS and will also be available for live streaming on Paramount+.
