Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Perform ‘Fast Car’ at the 2024 Grammys: A Historic Collaboration

  • by

According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will be making a special appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards, where she may perform with Luke Combs. Chapman is known for not frequently making public appearances.

According to insiders, Variety has revealed that Chapman and Luke Combs will perform together on stage, singing Chapman's popular folk-pop song "Fast Car" from the late 1980s. The song tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his album "Gettin' Old" in 2023, which helped it reach the top of the country radio charts.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. Variety reports that she has only been on camera performing three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with its original songwriter and recording artist. In July, after his country cover reached No. 1, his team released a statement stating that there were no current plans for him to perform with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be enthusiastic if the opportunity presented itself.

Even though she has not been very visible in the media since the song became popular again, Chapman has made a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached the top spot on the country charts, she mentioned that she was pleased for Combs and appreciative of a new group of fans who are enjoying her song. She also mentioned that she was surprised but honored to see her song on the country charts.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is specifically given to songwriters, so Tracy Chapman, the songwriter of the song, became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read aloud from the stage after her win was announced.

"I apologize for not being able to attend tonight. It is a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and want to give a special thanks to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car.'"

"Fast Car" by Combs has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This is his seventh nomination at the event, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and available for live streaming on Paramount+.
