Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Perform “Fast Car” Together at the 2024 Grammy Awards: A Historic Collaboration in the Making

  • by

According to a report from Variety, it is possible that Tracy Chapman will make a rare appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards to perform with Luke Combs.

According to insiders familiar with the situation, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will perform "Fast Car" together on stage. The song, originally a folk-pop hit by Chapman in the late '80s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his Gettin' Old album in 2023, which helped propel it to the top of the country radio charts.

If Chapman does decide to perform at the Grammys, it will be a significant surprise and probably one of the most discussed moments of the event. Variety reports that she has only been seen performing in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite his country cover of the song reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there were currently no plans for him to perform with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be enthusiastic if the opportunity did present itself.

Even though she has mostly kept a low profile since the song gained popularity again, Chapman has made a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached the top spot on the country charts, she mentioned that she was pleased for Combs and appreciative of a new group of fans who are enjoying her song. She also mentioned that she did not anticipate being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is given specifically to the songwriters, so Tracy Chapman, who wrote the song, became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud after her win was announced.

"I apologize for not being able to be there tonight. It's a great honor for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I want to express my gratitude to the CMAs, as well as a special thank you to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car.'"

The song "Fast Car" by Combs has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This nomination is his seventh one at the awards show. If he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The 2024 Grammy Awards is scheduled to take place at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and available for live streaming on Paramount+.

15 country music artists who have not received a Grammy award are ranked in this list. This list was put together by Billy Dukes.
