According to a report from Variety, Luke Combs is set to perform with Tracy Chapman at the upcoming Grammy Awards in 2024. Tracy Chapman, who rarely makes public appearances, is making an exception for this event.
According to insiders familiar with the situation, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing together on stage to sing "Fast Car," which is Chapman's well-known folk-pop song from the late 1980s about a couple trying to break free from a cycle of poverty. In 2023, Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old, which unexpectedly became a hit on the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably a highlight of the night. As per Variety, she has only been on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite the country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there were currently no plans for a collaboration with Chapman. However, they did mention that Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity to perform together ever came up.
Although she has mostly remained low-key about the renewed popularity of the song, Chapman has made a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car". She mentioned feeling "happy" for Combs and appreciative of a new group of fans who have embraced her song. Chapman also mentioned feeling honored to see her song on the country charts, even though she never expected it to happen.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This prestigious award is given to songwriters, and in this case, it was given to Chapman. This made her the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but she did send a message to be read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.
I apologize for not being able to attend tonight. It is a great honor for my song to be acknowledged after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the fans of 'Fast Car'.
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This nomination is his seventh at the Grammy ceremony. If he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The 2024 Grammy Awards ceremony will be televised from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
