Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Share the Stage at the 2024 Grammy Awards: A Historic Performance in the Making

  • by

A report from Variety suggests that Tracy Chapman, who is not frequently seen in public, may make a special appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards where she will be performing alongside Luke Combs.

According to insiders, Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing together on stage to sing "Fast Car," a popular folk-pop song from the late 1980s that tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old in 2023, which helped it reach the top of the country radio charts.

If Chapman does decide to perform at the Grammys, it will be a major surprise and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. Variety reports that she has only appeared on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and singer. Despite his cover of the song reaching No. 1, his team confirmed in July that there are currently no plans for him to perform with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be enthusiastic if the opportunity came up in the future.

Even though she has mostly kept a low profile since the song became popular again, Chapman has made a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car". When the song reached the top spot on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and appreciation for a new group of fans enjoying her song. She mentioned that she never thought her song would end up on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is specifically given to the songwriter, which in this case was Chapman. This made her the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the only songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, she did send a message to be read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.

"I regret that I couldn't attend the event tonight. It means a lot to me that my song is being acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."

Combs' song "Fast Car" is up for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammys. This nomination is his seventh at the awards show. If he takes home the prize, it will be his first Grammy win.

The 2024 Grammy Awards ceremony will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. Viewers can watch the event on CBS or stream it live on Paramount+.
