According to a report from Variety, it has been suggested that Tracy Chapman may make a rare public appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards where she will potentially perform alongside Luke Combs.
According to insiders familiar with the situation, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing together on stage to sing "Fast Car," which is Chapman's popular folk-pop song from the late 1980s. The song tells the story of a couple trying to break free from the cycle of poverty. In 2023, Combs included a cover of "Fast Car" on his album Gettin' Old, which helped the song reach the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. As reported by Variety, she has only been seen performing on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with its original songwriter and singer. Despite his team stating that there are currently no plans for a collaboration with Chapman, they mentioned that Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity presented itself.
Even though she has not been very visible in the public eye since the song became popular again, Chapman has made a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and her gratitude for a new group of fans who are enjoying her song. During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is specifically for songwriters, so Tracy Chapman, who wrote the song, became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud after her win was announced.
