Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Wow at the 2024 Grammy Awards: A Performance Years in the Making

  • by

According to a report from Variety, Tracy Chapman, who usually doesn't make many public appearances, is expected to perform at the 2024 Grammy Awards alongside Luke Combs.

According to insiders familiar with the situation, Variety has revealed that Chapman will be joining Luke Combs for a performance of "Fast Car," Chapman's popular folk-pop song from the late 1980s that tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. The song was unexpectedly featured on Combs' Gettin' Old album in 2023, leading to its success on the country radio charts.

If Chapman does decide to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. As reported by Variety, she has only been seen performing on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite the country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there are currently no plans for him to perform with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the chance to collaborate with Chapman ever came up.

Even though she has been mostly quiet about the song's popularity, Chapman has made a few comments in support of Combs' success with "Fast Car". She expressed happiness for Combs and thanked the new fans who have embraced her song. Chapman mentioned that she was surprised to see her song on the country charts, but feels honored to be included.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is specifically given to songwriters, and in this case, it was won by Chapman. This made her the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.

I apologize for not being able to attend tonight. It's a great honor for my song to be acknowledged again 35 years after it was first released. Thank you to the CMAs and a special shoutout to Luke and all the fans of 'Fast Car'.

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The Grammy Awards for 2024 will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
