According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will make a special appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards, where she will perform with Luke Combs. Chapman is known for not frequently appearing in public, so this news comes as a surprise to many fans.
Variety reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will perform "Fast Car" together on stage. The song, originally a folk-pop hit from the late '80s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his Gettin' Old album in 2023, which led to it becoming a hit on country radio.
If Chapman does decide to perform at the Grammys, it would be a significant surprise and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. According to Variety, she has only been in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. His team announced in July that, despite the country cover's success, there were no current plans for a joint performance with Chapman. They did mention that Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity presented itself in the future.
Even though she has mostly kept a low profile since the song gained popularity again, Chapman has made a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." She mentioned feeling happy and grateful for Combs' achievement in reaching No. 1 on the country charts, and she appreciates the new generation of fans who have embraced her song. Chapman also mentioned that she never anticipated being on the country charts, but she is honored to be included.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" won the Song of the Year award. This award is given to songwriters, and so Tracy Chapman, the songwriter of the song, became the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not at the ceremony, but she did send a message to be read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.
"I regret not being able to join you all this evening. It is a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged anew after 35 years since its release. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car.'"
The song "Fast Car" by Combs has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This is his seventh nomination at the awards show, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The Grammy Awards of 2024 will be televised from Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4th, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
