According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will be making a rare public appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards, where she may perform alongside Luke Combs.
According to sources familiar with the situation, it has been reported by Variety that Chapman will be joining Luke Combs in a live performance of "Fast Car," a popular song from the late 1980s that tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. The song took on a new life in 2023 when Combs covered it on his album "Gettin' Old," leading to it becoming a chart-topping hit on country radio.
If Chapman does decide to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably a highlight of the evening. Variety reports that she has only appeared on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has been open about his desire to perform "Fast Car" with its original songwriter and recording artist. His team stated in July that while there were no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman, Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity presented itself.
Even though she has been mostly quiet about the sudden popularity of the song, Chapman has released a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car". When the song reached number one on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and thanked the new fans who have embraced her song. She mentioned that she never anticipated being on the country charts, but she is grateful for the honor.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" received the Song of the Year award. This award is given specifically to songwriters, so the honor went to Chapman, who became the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as a sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.
"I regret that I couldn't attend the event tonight. It's a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again 35 years after its first release. I want to express my gratitude to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The Grammy Awards in 2024 will be shown live from Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4th. The event will be televised on CBS and can also be streamed live on Paramount+.
