According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will be making a rare appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards to perform with Luke Combs.
According to insiders familiar with the situation, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will perform "Fast Car" together on stage. "Fast Car" is a folk-pop hit from the late 1980s by Chapman that tells the story of a couple trying to break free from a cycle of poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his Gettin' Old album in 2023, which helped the song become a country radio chart-topper.
Should Chapman decide to perform at the Grammys, it will come as a major surprise and will probably be one of the most discussed moments of the evening. As reported by Variety, she has only been on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to sing "Fast Car" alongside its original writer and singer. In July, after his country cover reached the top spot, his team stated that there were no current plans for a joint performance with Chapman. However, they also mentioned that Combs would be thrilled if the chance to perform together ever came up.
Even though she has been mostly private about it, Chapman has made a few statements to show her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." She expressed her happiness and gratitude for the song reaching No. 1 on the country charts and for a new audience appreciating her music. Chapman mentioned that she never thought her song would be on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.
