According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will make a rare public appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards, where she may perform with Luke Combs.
According to sources familiar with the artists, Variety has stated that Chapman will be joining Luke Combs in a performance of "Fast Car," which was a popular folk-pop song in the late 1980s. The song tells the story of a couple trying to break free from the cycle of poverty. In 2023, Combs included a cover of "Fast Car" on his album Gettin' Old, which helped the song reach the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be a significant surprise and probably one of the most discussed moments of the event. As reported by Variety, she has only been in front of cameras three times since 2009, which was when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and performer. Although his team announced that there were no plans for a joint performance with Chapman after the country cover reached No. 1, they also mentioned that Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity ever presented itself.
Although she has mostly kept a low profile during the song's comeback, Chapman has made a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached the top spot on the country charts, she mentioned that she was pleased for Combs and appreciative of a younger audience connecting with her song. She also mentioned that she never anticipated being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This honor is specifically given to the songwriters, and in this case, it was won by Chapman, who became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the only songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but she did have a message read on her behalf after her win was announced.
"I regret not being able to join you all tonight. It is a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since its first release. Thank you to the CMAs and a special appreciation to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."
"Fast Car" by Combs has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the event, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy win.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
