Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Wow Audience with ‘Fast Car’ Performance at 2024 Grammy Awards

  • by

According to a report from Variety, there is speculation that Tracy Chapman may make a rare appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards, possibly performing with Luke Combs. Chapman is known for keeping a low profile in recent years, so this potential performance would be a special event for music fans.

According to insiders familiar with the artists, Chapman is set to perform "Fast Car" with Luke Combs at an upcoming event. "Fast Car" is a popular folk-pop song from the late 1980s that tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old in 2023, which helped it reach the top of the country radio charts.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will come as a huge surprise and will probably be one of the most-discussed moments of the evening. According to Variety, she has only been seen performing in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite his country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there were no current plans for a performance with Chapman. However, they mentioned that Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity presented itself.

Although she has mostly avoided public attention since the song regained popularity, Chapman has released a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she mentioned that she was pleased for Combs and appreciative of a new group of fans who have embraced her song. She also mentioned that she never anticipated being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be there.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is given to songwriters, and in this case, it was won by Chapman, making her the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but she did send a message to be read out loud from the stage after her win was declared.

"I apologize for not being able to attend tonight. It is a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again 35 years after it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs, Luke, and all the fans of 'Fast Car' for their support."

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the event, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and available for live streaming on Paramount+.
