According to sources familiar with the situation, Variety has announced that Chapman will be joining Luke Combs on stage to sing "Fast Car," which was a popular folk-pop song from the late 1980s about a couple trying to break free from poverty. The song was unexpectedly included in Combs' music collection in 2023, when he covered it on his album Gettin' Old and it quickly rose to the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman does decide to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the highlights of the night. According to Variety, she has only been recorded performing three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with its original songwriter and recording artist. His team released a statement in July stating that although there were no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman, he would be very enthusiastic if the opportunity came up.
Although she has not been very public about it, Chapman has made a few statements in support of Combs' success with the song "Fast Car." She expressed happiness for Combs and gratitude for a new generation of fans enjoying her song after it reached No. 1 on the country charts. Chapman also mentioned feeling honored to be on the country charts, even though she never expected it.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is specifically for songwriters, so Tracy Chapman, the writer of the song, became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. The song "Fast Car" by Combs has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammy Awards this year. This is his seventh nomination at the ceremony and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and available for live streaming on Paramount+.
