According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will make a rare public appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards, where she may perform with Luke Combs.
According to insiders, Variety has revealed that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together on stage. This song, originally by Chapman in the late 1980s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. In 2023, Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old, which became a hit on country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. Reportedly, she has only been on camera performing three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to sing "Fast Car" alongside the original songwriter and singer. Even though his team stated he had no immediate plans to perform with Chapman after the country cover became a hit, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the chance ever came up.
Although she has kept a low profile in regards to the song's comeback, Chapman has made a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and gratitude for a new group of fans enjoying her song. She mentioned that she never thought she would be on the country charts, but she feels honored to be a part of it.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is given specifically to songwriters, and in this case, it went to Chapman, who became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the only songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but she did provide a message to be read out loud from the stage after her win was declared.
I apologize for not being able to be present tonight. It is a great honor for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I want to express my gratitude to the CMAs and a special thank you to Luke and all the fans of "Fast Car."
"Fast Car" by Combs has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This is his seventh nomination at the event, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and will also be available for streaming on Paramount+.
