According to a report from Variety, it is said that Tracy Chapman, who doesn't usually make public appearances, might make an exception and perform at the 2024 Grammy Awards alongside Luke Combs.
According to insiders familiar with the situation, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will perform "Fast Car" together on stage. The song was originally a folk-pop hit from the late '80s, telling the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his 2023 album Gettin' Old, which unexpectedly became a hit on country radio and topped the charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most buzzed-about moments of the evening. Variety reports that she has only appeared in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Even though his country cover of the song reached No. 1, his team stated in July that there were no current plans for him to perform with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the opportunity came up in the future.
Even though she has been mostly private about the resurgence of the song, Chapman has made a few comments supporting Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she expressed happiness for Combs and appreciation for a new group of fans who are enjoying her song. She mentioned that she never imagined being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. The honor is given to songwriters, and in this case, it was given to Chapman, who became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud after her win was announced.
"I apologize for not being able to attend tonight. It is a great honor for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I want to express my gratitude to the CMAs and give a special thanks to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car.'"
The song "Fast Car" by Combs has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This is his seventh nomination at the awards show, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy win.
The Grammy Awards for 2024 will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4th, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and will also be available for live streaming on Paramount+.
