Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Wow Audience with “Fast Car” Performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards

According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will make a rare appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards, where she is expected to perform alongside Luke Combs.

According to insiders, Variety has revealed that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together on stage. The song, originally a folk-pop hit by Chapman in the late 1980s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his 2023 album "Gettin' Old," which unexpectedly topped the country radio charts.

Should Chapman decide to perform at the Grammys, it will be a significant surprise and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. As reported by Variety, she has only been seen performing on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite his country cover of the song reaching No. 1, his team stated in July that there were no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman. However, they mentioned that Combs would be very enthusiastic if the chance to perform together did come up.

Even though she has been mostly quiet about the renewed popularity of the song, Chapman has made a few statements in support of Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and gratitude for a new generation of fans who are enjoying her music. She mentioned that she never thought she would be on the country charts, but she feels honored to be recognized in that way.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is given specifically to songwriters, so Tracy Chapman, the songwriter of the winning song, became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was declared.

"I apologize for not being able to attend this evening. It is a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since its release. I am grateful to the CMAs, Luke, and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."

The song "Fast Car" by Combs has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the event, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
