According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman may make a rare public appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards to perform with Luke Combs.
According to insiders familiar with the situation, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will perform "Fast Car" together. The song, originally released by Chapman in the late 1980s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from the cycle of poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old in 2023, which helped propel "Fast Car" to the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. Variety reports that she has only been on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite his country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there are currently no plans for him to perform with Chapman. However, he would be thrilled if the opportunity to do so ever came about.
Even though she has not been very visible in the media since the song gained popularity again, Chapman has made a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." She expressed happiness and gratitude for the new fans who have embraced her song after it reached the top spot on the country charts. Chapman also mentioned feeling honored to have her song on the country charts, despite not expecting it.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is specifically for songwriters, so the honor went to Chapman, who became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the event, she did send a message to be read out from the stage after her win was declared.
"I regret that I couldn't be present with all of you tonight. It's a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged once again, 35 years after it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This is his seventh nomination at the awards show, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy win.
The 2024 Grammy Awards ceremony will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and will also be available for live streaming on Paramount+.
