According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will be making a rare public appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards, where she is expected to perform alongside Luke Combs.
According to informants close to the artists, Variety has stated that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together. This song, originally a folk-pop hit by Chapman in the late 1980s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. In 2023, Combs covered the song on his album Gettin' Old, leading to it becoming a country radio chart-topper.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be a significant and unexpected moment that will likely generate a lot of buzz. Variety reports that she has only appeared in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with its original songwriter and singer. After the country cover reached No. 1 in July, his team released a statement stating that there were no current plans for a performance with Chapman, but Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity arose in the future.
Even though she has been mostly private about the song's comeback, Chapman has made a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and appreciation for a new group of fans enjoying her song. She mentioned that she didn't anticipate being on the country charts, but feels honored to be included.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is specifically for songwriters, so the honor went to Chapman, who became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.
"I regret not being able to attend tonight. It's a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since its release. Thank you to the CMAs and a heartfelt thanks to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car.'"
The song "Fast Car" by Combs has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and will be available for live streaming on Paramount+.
