Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Wow Audience with ‘Fast Car’ Performance at the 2024 Grammys

  • by

According to a report from Variety, it is said that Luke Combs will be performing with Tracy Chapman at the Grammys in 2024. Tracy Chapman, who typically doesn't make many public appearances, may be making an exception for this event.

According to insiders, Variety has revealed that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together on stage. "Fast Car" is a folk-pop hit from the late 1980s by Chapman, which tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old in 2023, propelling it to the top of the country radio charts.

If Chapman does decide to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably a highlight of the evening. Reports from Variety show that she has only appeared on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to sing "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and performer. Despite the country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there were no immediate plans for a performance with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the chance to perform together ever came up.

Even though she has mostly stayed away from the spotlight during the song's comeback, Chapman has made a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached the top spot on the country charts, she mentioned that she was pleased for Combs and thankful for a new group of fans who appreciate her song. She also mentioned that she never imagined being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.

At the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is given to songwriters, so Tracy Chapman became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud after her win was announced.

"I regret not being able to join you all tonight. It is a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since its release. I am grateful to the CMAs and want to give a special thank you to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."

The song "Fast Car" by Combs has received a nomination for Best Country Solo Performance at the upcoming Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the event, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
