Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Wow Audience with “Fast Car” Performance at the Grammys

  • by

According to a report from Variety, it is said that Tracy Chapman rarely appears in public nowadays, but she may make an exception to perform at the 2024 Grammy Awards alongside Luke Combs.

According to insiders, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will perform "Fast Car" together on stage. The song, originally released by Chapman in the late 1980s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from a cycle of poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his album "Gettin' Old" in 2023, which propelled his version to the top of the country radio charts.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably a highlight of the evening. Variety reports that she has only appeared on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and artist who recorded it. Despite the country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there were no current plans for him to perform with Chapman. However, they also mentioned that he would be thrilled if the opportunity to perform with her ever came up.

Chapman has not been very visible in the media since "Fast Car" became popular again, but she has made a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with the song. When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she mentioned that she was pleased for Combs and thankful for a new group of fans who are enjoying her music. She also mentioned that she didn't anticipate being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This prestigious honor is given to songwriters, and in this case, it was awarded to Chapman, who became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.

"I regret not being able to attend tonight. It's a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since its release. I am grateful to the CMAs, as well as Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammy Awards this year. This is his seventh nomination at the event, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The 2024 Grammy Awards will be broadcasted from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and will also be available for live streaming on Paramount+.
