According to a report from Variety, it is being said that Tracy Chapman, who usually avoids public appearances, may be making a special appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards where she will perform alongside Luke Combs.
According to insiders, Variety has stated that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing together on stage to sing "Fast Car," a popular folk-pop song from the late 1980s. The song tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his Gettin' Old album in 2023, which helped it reach the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman does decide to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the night. Variety reports that she has only sung in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to sing "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and singer. Despite his country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there were no current plans for a performance with Chapman. However, they did mention that Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity presented itself in the future.
Chapman has mostly remained private about the revival of the song, but she has made a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she mentioned that she was pleased for Combs and thankful for a younger audience enjoying her song. She also mentioned that she was surprised to see her song on the country charts, but she felt honored by the experience.
At the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This prestigious honor is given only to songwriters, and in this case, it was given to Chapman, who became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read aloud after her win was announced.
"I regret not being able to attend tonight. It is a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially thankful to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This nomination is his seventh at the awards show. If he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The 2024 Grammy Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
