According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman may make a rare public appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards, where she is expected to perform with Luke Combs.
According to insiders, Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together. The song, originally released in the late 1980s by Chapman, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his Gettin' Old album in 2023, which helped it reach the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably a highlight of the evening. Sources say she has only performed on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. In July, after his country cover reached No. 1, his team stated that there were no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman, but they would be enthusiastic if the opportunity presented itself.
Although she has not been in the spotlight much since the song gained popularity again, Chapman has released a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached number one on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and appreciation for a new group of fans who are enjoying her song. She mentioned that she never anticipated being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" won Song of the Year. This award is given only to the songwriters, so Tracy Chapman became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but she did send a message to be read out loud after her win was announced.
"I regret not being able to attend tonight. It is a great honor for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. Thank you to the CMAs and a special shoutout to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car.'"
Combs has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammys for his song "Fast Car." This nomination is his seventh at the Grammy Awards, and if he were to win, it would be his first Grammy award.
The 2024 Grammy Awards ceremony will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
