According to a report from Variety, there is speculation that Tracy Chapman may make a rare public appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards to perform alongside Luke Combs.
According to insiders, Variety has reported that Chapman will be performing "Fast Car" with Luke Combs. This song, originally a folk-pop hit from the late 1980s by Chapman, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from the cycle of poverty. Surprisingly, Combs included a cover of the song on his 2023 album Gettin' Old, which led to his version of "Fast Car" topping the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be a significant and unexpected moment that will probably be a topic of conversation. Variety reported that she has only appeared on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Although his team stated in July that there were no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman, they mentioned that he would be enthusiastic if the opportunity presented itself.
Although she has not been in the spotlight much since the song gained popularity again, Chapman has released a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she mentioned that she was pleased for Combs and thankful for a younger audience appreciating her song. She also mentioned that she was surprised but honored to see her song on the country charts.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This prestigious honor is given specifically to the songwriters, and in this case, it was awarded to Chapman. This marked a significant milestone as Chapman became the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year award as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, she did send a message to be shared on stage after her win was announced.
"I regret that I couldn't attend the event tonight. It's a great honor for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. Thank you to the CMAs and a special thank you to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This is his seventh nomination at the ceremony and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
