According to a report from Variety, Luke Combs is expected to perform alongside Tracy Chapman at the 2024 Grammy Awards. Tracy Chapman, who doesn't usually make public appearances, is rumored to be making an exception for this event.
According to insiders familiar with the situation, Variety has revealed that Chapman will be joining Luke Combs on stage to perform "Fast Car," a popular folk-pop song from the late 1980s that tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old in 2023, which helped propel "Fast Car" to the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman does decide to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the event. Variety reported that she has only performed in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite the country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there are currently no plans for a collaboration with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be enthusiastic if the opportunity to perform together arose.
Even though she has not been very visible in the spotlight since the song became popular again, Chapman has made a few comments expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached number 1 on the country charts, she mentioned that she was pleased for Combs and thankful for a new group of fans enjoying her song. She also stated that she didn't anticipate her song being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is given to songwriters, so Tracy Chapman received the honor as the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.
"I regret that I couldn't join you all this evening. It's a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. Thank you to the CMAs and a heartfelt thanks to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."
"Fast Car" by Combs is up for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammy Awards this year. This nomination is his seventh at the event, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy win.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
